UF diabetes researchers test therapy to prevent immune attack against insulin-producing cells

New research from the University of Florida highlights a promising strategy to slow the progression of Type 1 diabetes by targeting the disease at its source.

In a study published in Science Advances, researchers led by Edward A. Phelps, Ph.D., developed a precision-designed therapy that acts directly on insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas. Instead of broadly suppressing the immune system, the approach signals harmful T cells to stand down at the site of attack.

Early findings show the therapy can help preserve insulin secretion in human tissue models, offering a potential path toward more targeted and effective treatments.
