Wesley Bolch, Ph.D., Distinguished Professor in the J. Crayton Pruitt Family Department of Biomedical Engineering and collaborators at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center have received a five-year National Cancer Institute R01 award to further develop MIRDsoft, an open-source software platform used worldwide for radiation dosimetry.
The project will expand MIRDsoft’s capabilities to support more personalized radiation dose calculations for patients undergoing radiopharmaceutical therapies and medical imaging procedures. Planned enhancements include new tools for patient-specific dosimetry based on body size and anatomy, improved dosimetry models for preclinical animal studies, advanced tumor dose calculations, and simplified biological effect modeling for clinical use.
The University of Florida’s role in the collaboration is to develop comprehensive organ dosimetry libraries for both nuclear medicine and computed tomography imaging using a newly developed series of 760 adult and pediatric human digital twins. Additional work will expand the MIRDcalc and MIRDct codes to include a 12-member series of male and female laboratory mice and a 10-member series of male and female laboratory rats to support dosimetry for preclinical radiopharmaceutical development.
By providing free, validated dosimetry tools to researchers, clinicians and regulators, the project aims to improve treatment planning, optimize therapeutic outcomes and enhance patient safety in nuclear medicine and radiology.
The award is funded by the National Cancer Institute and will support the project through 2031.
