A first of its kind technology developed here in Gainesville can predict the probability and possible cause of death in the intensive care unit before vitals even fail. The new artificial intelligence system has the capability to combine and interpret the information of a patient’s vitals—it then can predict why a patient’s vitals may be changing. The system is known as Deep Sequential Organ Failure Assessment, or deep-sofa. First of all, it is more accurate,” said Parisa Rashidi, a UF biomedical engineering professor. “Second, it can provide the risk of mortality in a more timely manner so the doctors can respond and provide intervention.”
