Research Summary:

Dr. Simmons is the Director of the Biomimetic Actuators and Integrated Technologies (GatorBAIT) Lab, where researchers develop microsystems to mimic bodily functions in a dish. Specifically, systems are being developed to recreate the mechanical microenvironment by applying mechanical strain, biochemically tuning substrate stiffness, and creating composite structures for biomimetic tissues-on-a-chip. For example, the GatorBAIT Lab has developed cell culture systems that mimic heart muscle, allowing myocardium-like constructs to be made out of co-cultured cells and mechanically stimulated in high-throughput bioreactors. Prof. Simmons and her team also develop novel image processing tools to compliment their dynamic systems.
