Allen elected as 2026 AIMBE Fellow

Kyle D. Allen

Kyle D. Allen, Ph.D., a professor in the J. Crayton Pruitt Family Department of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Florida, was inducted into the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering College of Fellows as part of the 2026 class.

Election to the AIMBE College of Fellows is among the highest professional distinctions accorded to medical and biological engineers, representing the top 2% of engineers in these fields. College membership honors individuals who have made outstanding contributions to engineering and medicine research, practice or education, as well as those advancing new and emerging areas of technology.

Allen was nominated, reviewed and elected by peers and members of the College of Fellows for leadership in developing engineering methods for the detection and treatment of chronic musculoskeletal pain.

Allen directs the University of Florida’s Orthopedic Biomedical Engineering Laboratory, where his research focuses on improving the evaluation of preclinical osteoarthritis models and accelerating the translation of new diagnostics and therapeutics for joint diseases. His team is developing behavioral assays to better assess pain in preclinical models, engineering magnetic nanoparticle-based methods to study joint-level molecular changes, and advancing tissue engineering and cell therapies to restore joint function.

By integrating engineering, biology and clinical insight, Allen’s work aims to better understand how degenerative joint diseases lead to chronic pain and disability while advancing more effective, personalized treatment strategies. He is nationally recognized for his contributions to musculoskeletal pain research and is involved in major collaborative efforts including the NIH’s REJOIN Consortium, the UF PAIN TEAM training program and the GALLOP initiative, an observational veterinary clinical trial focused on improving the understanding and treatment of equine pain.

“It is an honor to be inducted into the AIMBE College of Fellows and to be recognized alongside colleagues who are advancing biomedical engineering in meaningful ways.”

— Kyle Allen, University of Florida professor of biomedical engineering

Allen was formally inducted during the AIMBE Annual Event held April 13, 2026, in Arlington, alongside 175 members of the 2026 class. AIMBE Fellows represent a distinguished group of leaders across academia, industry, clinical practice and government, including members of the National Academies and recipients of top honors in science and engineering.
