Current Students

This section provides essential information for current BME graduate students — including program guidelines, selecting a faculty advisor, and earning a minor in Biomedical Engineering. Use the resources below to stay on track and make the most of your experience at UF.

The Graduate Guidelines outline departmental policies, degree requirements, and expectations for students in the M.S., M.E., and Ph.D. programs. Each set of guidelines corresponds to a student’s catalog year (the year they entered their degree program).

Students may request to update their catalog year using the Change of Catalog Year Form.

Note: The BME department no longer offers a Medical Physics Concentration. Students interested in this area should visit the UF College of Medicine website for details.

Choosing the right faculty advisor is one of the most important steps in your graduate studies.

Master’s Students

  • Select a Supervisory Chair by the end of your second term.
  • Your Chair will oversee your Capstone Project (non-thesis) or Master’s Thesis (thesis option).
  • Only faculty with BME Graduate Faculty Status may serve as Supervisory Chairs. You can verify this designation on the department’s faculty page.
  • Meet with several potential mentors early to discuss research interests and goals.

Ph.D. Students

  • Advisor matching often begins during the admission process. Applicants are reviewed by faculty in similar research areas and may interview before admission.
  • Some students are matched directly through Graduate Assistantships, while others select their advisor during their first semester.
  • Doctoral students will also form a Supervisory Committee to support and guide their research.

💡 If a student ever needs to change advisors, the Associate Chair of Graduate Programs can assist in coordinating the process.

Graduate students in good academic standing within the Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering can earn a minor in Biomedical Engineering.
