The J. Crayton Pruitt Family Department of Biomedical Engineering (UF BME) admits talented students from a wide range of academic and professional backgrounds. Our holistic admissions process considers academic performance, research experience, leadership, and life experiences.
All applications must be submitted through the UF Graduate Admissions system. Incomplete applications cannot be reviewed.
Fall 2026 PhD Fee Waiver Application
Follow these steps to submit a complete application:
Step 1: Select Your Program
- College: Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering
- Major: Biomedical Engineering
- Degree: Master’s (MS or ME) or Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)
- Term: Select the appropriate start term and confirm your program.
Note:
- Ph.D. applicants are automatically considered for the master’s program—no need to apply to both.
- All master’s applications (MS or ME) go into the same pool. Students admitted to the MS program may later switch to ME once they verify an ABET-accredited undergraduate engineering degree.
Step 2: Upload Required Documents
- Transcripts: Upload unofficial copies for review. Official copies are only required if admitted and you accept the offer.
- Statement of Purpose (1.5–2 pages): See section below for detailed prompts.
- Resume/CV: Summarize academic, professional, and extracurricular achievements.
- Letters of Recommendation: Three (3) required, submitted directly through the UF application system.
- Test Scores:
- GRE is not required.
- TOEFL or IELTS is required for international applicants unless exempt (see English proficiency policy).
- Additional Documents: Optional writing sample (e.g., journal article, lab report, senior design report, or conference abstract) may be uploaded in the miscellaneous section.
Step 3: BME Supplemental Application (Ph.D. Applicants Only)
- Ph.D. applicants must complete the BME Supplemental Application as part of their submission.
Step 4: Application Fee
- A nonrefundable $30 application fee must be paid through the UF system before submission.
Step 5: Application Status
- You’ll receive an email 24–48 hours after submission with instructions to access the MyAdmissions Portal to track your application status.
Your statement is a key part of our holistic review. Please limit to 1.5–2 single-spaced pages and address the following:
Required:
- Describe how your background and life experiences have influenced your decision to pursue graduate education, and how UF BME aligns with your goals.
- Identify UF BME faculty or research areas of interest and how they match your objectives.
- Discuss your approach to overcoming challenges—include examples of persistence or resilience and how they might translate to success in graduate school.
Optional:
- Explain any challenges that affected your academic record (e.g., research access, grades, personal issues).
- Upload a technical writing sample (optional).
Applicants without a B.S. in Biomedical Engineering must demonstrate readiness in the following areas:
- Mathematics & Science: 3 Calculus, 1 Differential Equations, 2 Physics (with Calculus), 1 General Chemistry, 3 in Biology/Biochemistry/Chemistry
- Engineering Fundamentals: At least one course from three of six core engineering areas —Statics/Dynamics, Thermodynamics/Fluid Flow, Circuits/Signals, Materials, Economics/Management, or Statistics
- Additional Requirements: 1 course in Technical Communications and 1 in Programming (Java, MATLAB, C/C++, etc.)
Applicants who lack one or more of these prerequisites may be conditionally admitted and required to complete the missing coursework during the first year (these credits do not count toward the graduate degree).
International applicants must:
- Submit official transcripts and degree certificates in both the original language and certified English translation.
- Demonstrate English proficiency through TOEFL (Code 5812) or IELTS scores (unless exempt).
- Send all materials only through the UF Application System—do not mail to the department.
- Applicants from recognized English-speaking countries or with at least one academic year at an English-language university may be exempt from testing.
