The Biomedical Engineering (BME) undergraduate major is a limited-access program. Qualified transfer applicants must complete an Associate of Arts (A.A.) degree at a university or community college before arriving at UF.
Minimum Requirements
To be considered for admission into the upper-division BME program, transfer students must:
- Have a minimum 2.0 cumulative GPA (overall).
- Have a minimum 2.8 GPA in required pre-professional courses (labs excluded from this calculation).
- Note: Although 2.8 is the minimum, a GPA of 3.5 or higher is considered most competitive.
- Complete all required pre-professional courses and labs before enrolling at UF (no exceptions).
- Have no more than three pre-professional courses (not counting labs) in progress at the time of application.
- Have no more than two attempts per pre-professional course (withdrawals count as an attempt).
⚠️ Applicants who do not meet these minimums are not eligible for admission. Pre-professional courses cannot be completed after admission to UF.
Organic Chemistry Requirement
- As of January 2018, CHM2211 (Organic Chemistry II) is not required before submitting a transfer application.
- However, students who have not taken it must complete CHM2211 with a C or higher within their first two semesters at UF.
- Completion of Organic Chemistry I and II (or approved equivalents) is a mandatory prerequisite for BME courses and graduation.
Deadlines
Transfer students must apply through the UF Office of Admissions by the posted deadlines:
- Spring: September 15
- Summer A/C & Summer B: February 1
- Fall: May 15
➡️ Applications are referred to the department only after Admissions considers them complete. Decisions are not rolling; they are reviewed in batches (typically mid-March for Summer/Fall and mid-October for Spring).
Important Notes
- Double Majors/Dual Degrees: Students interested in pursuing BME as a secondary major or a dual degree must meet with the BME advisor to confirm eligibility. Additional college policies and applications apply. Learn more: UF Registrar Forms.
- Transfer Students Cannot Switch Majors: UF Engineering policy does not allow students to apply under a different major to complete missing prerequisites and later switch to BME. Students should apply only for the major they intend to pursue.
- Timeline to Graduation: Transfer students should plan to be enrolled at UF for three years, due to the sequencing of BME courses. See the Plan of Study for details.
