The University of Florida’s J. Crayton Pruitt Family Department of Biomedical Engineering congratulates Chaoyue Sun, a Ph.D. candidate in the Smart Medical Informatics Learning & Evaluation (SMILE) Lab, on receiving the Certificate of Outstanding Merit from the UF International Center.
This honor, part of the 2024 International Student Achievement Awards, recognizes exceptional international students who make significant contributions to UF’s global mission of teaching, research and service. Sun exemplifies these ideals through his academic achievements, innovative research and dedication to advancing public health.
During his Ph.D. program, Sun maintained a 3.96 GPA in coursework while balancing research and teaching responsibilities. He served twice as a teaching assistant for graduate-level courses in machine learning and pattern recognition in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, demonstrating his commitment to fostering an effective and supportive learning environment.
Sun’s research focuses on leveraging advanced artificial intelligence techniques to model and predict disease transmission, providing critical insights to help public health officials design targeted interventions, particularly for HIV. By integrating data from diverse sources, including the Florida Department of Health, and developing deep graph learning-based predictive models, his work enhances understanding of disease dynamics and optimizes the allocation of public health resources.
Sun’s first-authored paper on AI-powered disease transmission forecasting received the Best Paper Award at the international conference HEALTHINF 2024. Another of his papers was published in PLOS Computational Biology, further showcasing his contributions to global health research.
Sun’s recognition by the UF International Center underscores the vital role of international scholars in shaping the future of biomedical engineering and research at UF. His work exemplifies the spirit of innovation, dedication and global collaboration that define UF’s mission.
