Honoring the life and legacy of Dr. John Crayton Pruitt Jr.

The J. Crayton Pruitt Family Department of Biomedical Engineering at the Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering, University of Florida, honors the memory of Dr. John Crayton Pruitt Jr., a distinguished cardiothoracic surgeon and devoted family man who passed away on Oct. 21, 2024.

Dr. Pruitt Jr., known to many simply as “Crayton,” carried forward a legacy of medical and engineering innovation first established by his father, Dr. J. Crayton Pruitt Sr., whose visionary philanthropy in 2006 led to the naming of UF’s Biomedical Engineering Department in his honor. The Pruitt family’s enduring contributions have shaped and sustained the department, driving its growth as a national leader in high-impact research and transformative student experiences.

Born in St. Petersburg, Florida, Crayton demonstrated a brilliant mind and fearless spirit from a young age, attending St. Petersburg High School and later the University of Florida College of Medicine. His medical career took him from UF to Salt Lake City, where he trained in cardiothoracic surgery at the University of Utah, and ultimately to Clearwater, where he became a respected cardiac surgeon at Cardiac Surgical Associates. He is remembered by colleagues and patients alike for his dedication, skill, and compassionate care.

Beyond his professional achievements, Crayton led a life fueled by passion and curiosity. Whether navigating the waters on his boat, scaling mountain slopes, crafting classical guitars as a self-taught luthier, or pushing his endurance in the mountains of Colorado, Crayton inspired all around him.

Dr. Christine Schmidt, former chair of UF Biomedical Engineering, reflects on the impact of Crayton’s family and the department’s meaningful connection to their legacy: “The Pruitt family’s vision and support have been pivotal in shaping UF BME’s path. In particular, Crayton was committed and integral to the department for many years; he loved to participate in events, particularly those focused on students. Although he was so well accomplished, he was humble and never wanted to be in the spotlight. Instead, he always put the students in the spotlight. Crayton was a kind and gentle person, and I will personally miss him greatly. We honor Crayton’s memory and his family’s lasting presence in our department’s journey.”

Dr. Cherie Stabler, current chair of UF Biomedical Engineering, emphasizes the department’s dedication to honoring and expanding the legacy of innovation established by the Pruitt family: “In celebrating the life of Crayton Pruitt Jr., we recognize the deep impact his family’s legacy continues to have on our department. The Pruitt family’s vision and generosity have not only shaped who we are but also inspire us daily to push the boundaries of biomedical innovation. We are honored to carry forward their dedication to improving lives and advancing the field.”

The J. Crayton Pruitt Family Department of Biomedical Engineering extends its deepest condolences to Crayton’s family, friends, and loved ones. His adventurous spirit and compassionate work will be remembered as an enduring part of the Pruitt family’s remarkable legacy.
