The success of the cochlear implant has imparted hope and inspiration to researchers developing the artificial eye for the blind. Since 1990, researchers began work to develop artificial retinas, with several groups now showing encouraging clinical trial results. The Seoul Artificial Retina Project started in the year 2000; during past 14 years, we have developed polyimide-based gold electrode arrays, three-dimensional electrode arrays, stimulation protocols and parameters, functional evaluation protocols and a liquid-crystal polymer-based retinal prosthesis system. Animal experiments show that our system works well, evoking visual stimuli and appropriate cortical responses. Recent advances by other research groups will also be introduced in this talk.

Dr. Jong-Mo Seo is a member of the Faculties of Ophthalmology and of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the Seoul National University. He graduated from Seoul National University (SNU) School of Medicine in 1996, and did his internship, residency, and retina fellowship at the Department of Ophthalmology in the SNU Hospital. During the same period, he studied at the Department of Biomedical Engineering, receiving the M.S. and Ph.D. for his research in computer simulation of ophthalmic surgery and retinal image processing. He helps direct the Seoul Artificial Retina Project and is in charge of animal surgery.
