Many processes throughout carcinogenesis involve interactions with the cellular
microenvironment, such as the stiffness of the extracellular matrix, which cannot
be comprehensively described merely by conventional biomedical disciplines.
Fundamental biomedical research has placed an emphasis on the molecular
level (proteins), but knowledge gained from this focus cannot be directly applied
to clinical research. Recent studies of microRNAs present a great opportunity to
connect the gaps between clinical and fundamental research and between the
molecular and cellular levels due to their important regulatory role in cells. Taken
together, I will discuss a strategy to embrace this opportunity through the
application of high throughput biophysics to cancer research.
