Three UF BME Ph.D. students were named Outstanding International Students by the UF International Center.

Enrico Opri’s advisor is Dr. Aysegul Gunduz and his research interests are within the fields of neural engineering and machine learning. His work involves the study of pathological brain activity in motor disorders for the development of next-generation, neural-activity based, closed-loop deep brain stimulators.

Nikunj Agrawal’s advisor is Dr. Christine E. Schmidt and his research interest is in designing versatile drug delivery platforms that can produce controlled and localized release profiles of small molecule therapeutics. His work focuses on promoting regeneration of damaged axons after spinal cord injury.

Jiapu Liang’s advisor is Dr. Cherie Stabler and his research centers on the engineering of cell-based tissues for the treatment of Type 1 diabetes, specifically the development of a translational biomaterial platform for in situ oxygen and drug release.

The Outstanding International Student Awards Ceremony was initiated to highlight the accomplishments of international students at the University of Florida. The awards are designed to recognize students who meet exemplary academic achievements and a wide range of accomplishments and contributions. The awards ceremony will be held on November 17, 2017 at the Reitz Union, Grand Ballroom.
