Phelps appointed to NIH study section

Edward Phelps, Ph.D., associate professor in the J. Crayton Pruitt Family Department of Biomedical Engineering, has been invited to serve as a member of the Biomaterials and Biointerfaces Study Section, part of the Bioengineering Sciences and Technologies Integrated Review Group within the Center for Scientific Review at the National Institutes of Health. His term began immediately and will run through June 30, 2031.

Membership on an NIH study section represents a major professional commitment and a unique opportunity to contribute to the national biomedical research effort. Members of Initial and Integrated Review Groups evaluate applications submitted to NIH, make funding recommendations to national advisory councils and boards, and assess the state of research in their fields. These efforts play a critical role in advancing medical and scientific progress nationwide.

Phelps was nominated for this role based on his expertise in biomaterials and tissue engineering, reflected in his research accomplishments, publications in leading scientific journals, and other significant honors. The NIH noted that service requires scientific achievement, sound judgment, objectivity, and the ability to work effectively in a group, qualities Phelps has demonstrated throughout his career.
