Allen receives Adele L. Boskey, Ph.D., Award for Mentorship and Research Excellence

Kyle D. Allen, Ph.D., professor in the J. Crayton Pruitt Family Department of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Florida, has been named the 2026 recipient of the Adele L. Boskey, Ph.D., Award by the Orthopaedic Research Society (ORS). This prestigious recognition honors mid-career members who demonstrate outstanding and sustained commitment to mentorship while maintaining an impactful and innovative research program.

Allen directs UF’s Orthopedic Biomedical Engineering Laboratory, where his research explores how degenerative joint diseases lead to chronic pain and disability. His team works to develop and translate new strategies to manage chronic joint pain, bridging fundamental research with clinical applications. Nationally recognized as a leader in musculoskeletal pain research, Allen contributes to the NIH’s REJOIN Consortium, the UF PAIN TEAM training program, and the GALLOP initiative—an observational veterinary clinical trial aimed at improving the understanding and treatment of equine pain.

Beyond his research achievements, Allen is deeply committed to cultivating the next generation of orthopedic researchers. His inclusive approach to mentorship spans undergraduate through postdoctoral levels, involving engagement with bridge-to-baccalaureate programs and national mentoring networks. Within ORS, he has played a vital role on the New Investigator Mentoring Committee and has helped organize destigmatizing mental health workshops at the society’s annual meetings—initiatives that reflect his dedication to building supportive and inclusive research communities.

“Mentorship is one of the most meaningful parts of what we do as scientists and engineers,” said Allen. “I’ve been fortunate to work with students and colleagues who challenge me to grow every day. This award is truly a reflection of their creativity, persistence, and passion for discovery.”

The Adele L. Boskey Award recognizes mid-career ORS members who exemplify excellence in mentorship, advocacy, and research leadership. Named in honor of Dr. Adele L. Boskey, a pioneering scientist in musculoskeletal research, the award celebrates her legacy of mentorship and leadership across orthopaedic science and engineering.
