Dr. Sarah Furtney is an Instructional Assistant Professor and Undergraduate Coordinator in the J. Crayton Pruitt Family Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME). Throughout her career, Dr. Furtney has been dedicated to the training and engagement of students in the field of biomedical engineering with a focus on tissue engineering and regenerative medicine (TE&RM). Her accomplishments in this space include: the optimization of a hands-on laboratory training in TE&RM, early and innovative student engagement in BME and TE&RM research, training in science policy and safety as it relates to BME, incorporation of BME educational initiatives in the specialized professional societies, and expanding the participation of groups underrepresented in this field. In her role as Undergraduate Coordinator, Dr. Furtney develops and implements academic and professional advising tools and programs that serve the department. The culmination of these efforts on education, mentoring, and outreach have been recognized through several important individual awards: the 2017 Clemson University President’s Outstanding Woman Award, the 2019 UF BME Faculty Service Excellence Award, the 2020 Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine Educational Award, the 2020 UF Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering Faculty Advisor/Mentor of the Year Award, and the 2020 UF BME Faculty Teaching Excellence Award.
