Applying systems engineering principles to the design and development of medical devices streamlines the product development process from concept/idea to production. This talk will explore the holistic, systems thinking approach used in the design of multiplexed immunoassays, hypodermic syringes and ultrasound systems. Additionally, the COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated the digital transformation of healthcare. This talk will also highlight key growth areas in healthcare, such as artificial intelligence and telehealth.


Patented inventor, Dr. Arlyne Simon, is a biomedical engineer, children’s author and founder of Abby Invents – a K-5 invention education company. Her mission is to inspire kid inventors, everywhere. Recognized as a trailblazing female innovator by the United States Patent and Trademark Office, Arlyne is a national STEM advocate and was honored with a life-size statue in the If Then She Can Exhibit. Arlyne invented a blood test that detects when cancer patients reject bone marrow transplants. Her passion for healthcare has led her to design syringes, train clinical lab technologists in Kenya, help build supercomputers and now design next-generation ultrasound systems. As the author of the Abby Invents picture book series, Arlyne crafts stories about a girl inventor who creates things that do not exist – like unbreakable crayons! Her most recent title, Abby Invents The Foldibot, was a Finalist for the 2022 AAAS/Subaru Prize for excellence in science books.

A native of Dominica, she holds a Ph.D. in macromolecular science and engineering from the University of Michigan and an undergraduate degree in chemical & biomolecular engineering from Georgia Tech. Visit her at and
