Intelligent Data Driven Methods in Biomedical Informatics

In recent years, we have witnessed a rapid surge in intelligent computational approaches for solving various health and biomedical problems. One important factor is the availability of enormous amounts of complex data from various sources. For example, information from electronic health records (EHRs) has become a valuable resource for large-scale data analysis. At the same time, rapid strides made in the area of sensor networks and personal devices also have made it possible to continuously capture health related data. Data mining and machine learning are central to all these systems, and constitute a major step towards developing more intelligent healthcare solutions. These techniques not only make it possible to process and transform big data into actionable knowledge, but also facilitate decision making and reasoning. In the age of big data and ubiquitous computing, we have an unprecedented opportunity to develop novel biomedical and health solutions. This talk will discuss the role of data mining and machine learning in biomedical informatics, and will explore the challenges and opportunities in this area.
