Abstract:
Public Law 106-580 creating the NIBIB was signed by President Clinton on December 29, 2000. Since then the Institute has grown to have a major role in the support of research in Bioengineering, Biomedical Imaging, and Bioinformatics. Currently the Institute supports about 800 research grants and contracts at academic institutions and businesses around the country. In this presentation I will highlight a few research projects that illustrate the breadth of our research agenda in bioengineering. I will then talk about the grant review and award process and about some of the things I wish someone had explained to me before I applied for my first NIH grant. Finally I will give a snapshot of where I think the Institute and Bioengineering are headed.
